History of the Federation

Inspired by the document of the Sacred Congregation, Sponsa Christi and by the Federation of Spain, Mo. Ma. de los Angeles proposed to the monasteries of the Philippines to have a Common Economic Fund in the year 1993.  It was a starting step for the Federation.

In 1994, she pursued with the proposal to have the Federation in the Philippines.  It was with a strong determination and belief that the Federation is according to the mind of the Church and the desire of Jesus that the monasteries be one as HE and the Father are one.

The beginning, the birth of the Stella Maris Federation of the Carmelite Nuns was not easy.  The first steps were uncertain and painful as a normal process of growing.  During those first years, Reverend Father Peter Kramer, O. Carm., was with us, listening patiently and giving opportune, wise and prudent advice.  After the consultative votations held in the different monasteries, the historic step was made by the assembly of Prioresses and Delegates on January 24, 1994 at Carmel of Our Lady of Nazareth, Cabanatuan City.  The Assembly gave the deliberative votation to have a Federation in “ad experimentum” for two years.  Reverend Father Peter generously accepted the appointment of the Sacred Congregation on December 14, 1994 as the Delegate to prepare the Stella Maris Federation of the Carmelite Nuns in the Philippines during its experimental period.

Finally, on January 8, 1996 within the Second General Assembly held at the Carmelite Monastery of the Holy Family, Guiguinto, Bulacan, the Assembly brought the results of the secret votations of the Chapter nuns of the monasteries which totaled to a majority vote in favor of a Federation.  Father Peter’s presence was there as a Religious of great virtues which he acquired in his long and faithful service to GOD in Carmel.

On September 21, 1998, the Sacred Congregation established with its approval the Stella Maris Federation of the Carmelite Nuns in the Philippines on September 21, 1996 by the Sacred Congregation.

In the year 2001, the Federation  gave fruit to it first and only foundation in Tanay, Rizal.  Carmel of Mary, Star of the Sea stands as witness that Sisters from different monasteries can live together.
