Brief History

This is the first foundation of Carmel of Our Lady of Maravillas and St. Joseph in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, established by the late Mother Trinidad Cuesta on November 16, 1958. Its origin came from Carmel of Our Lady of Maravillas, Madrid, Spain which was canonically erected in the year 1613, a Carmelite order of Ancient Observance. The Prioress of Dumaguete, Mother Ma. Angelica, accepted the invitation of the late Archbishop Onesimo C. Gordoncillo, D.D. to have a foundation in his Archdiocese. She consulted the whole community and six nuns were chosen to start the foundation on January 9, 1990.

Their installation took place at the Mabasa residence on January 20, 1990, while their temporary house was being constructed at the proposed site in Lawa-an. They stayed there for 14 months and then transferred to their temporary house in Lawa-an on November 16, 1991. Laying of the cornerstone and construction followed.

Having no real assets, they proposed to construct on October 15, 2002 the all-purpose building so that its rentals will be of great help for all their necessities. Though the 2nd floor is yet to be finished, it is already being utilized for private or group retreats, conferences and receptions.

The Sisters also started Host production to raise funds to complete the construction of the 2nd floor. God is so good and powerful, they were able to procure two host baking machines free of charge from Begeca, Germany. Truly, with steadfast faith, prayer and little sacrifices, everything will go smoothly. “Praised be the most Holy Triune God and our Mother and Queen of Carmel!”
